The easiest way to find a perfume for a woman, whether for yourself or as a present, is to start from what she already loves wearing, identify its scent family, and then test one or two new perfumes from that family on the skin for a few hours before deciding. Scent families such as fresh, floral, powdery and warm give you a map, and testing on skin rather than paper shows how a perfume really behaves. Choosing for the occasions she dresses for most often narrows the options further.
Below you will find a step-by-step method, a table of scent families with examples, advice on testing and applying perfume, and a few points to consider when the perfume is a gift.
In short
- Most women return to the same scent family again and again, so the perfume she wears now is the best clue to what she will like next.
- The main families are fresh, floral, powdery, fruity, sweet (gourmand) and warm or woody, and many perfumes combine two of them.
- Perfume should be tested on skin and judged after at least 20 to 30 minutes, once the first sharp notes have faded.
- An eau de parfum contains more fragrance oil than an eau de toilette, so it usually lasts longer and needs fewer sprays.
- Fragrance ingredients can cause contact allergy in some people, so anyone with sensitive skin should spray onto clothes rather than skin.
Where do you start when choosing a perfume for a woman?
Start with what she already wears or has worn for years. Look at the bottles on her dressing table, ask a sister or a close friend, or think about what she smells of when she hugs you. Even if you do not know the names, you can usually describe the feeling: clean and fresh, soft and comforting, bold and dramatic, or sweet and playful. That description is more useful than any list of popular perfumes.
Next, think about when she will wear it. A perfume for the office needs to be pleasant at arm’s length and not fill a meeting room. A perfume for evenings, weddings and Christmas parties can be richer and more noticeable. Many women own one easy everyday scent and one for special occasions, so it helps to know which gap you are filling.
Finally, consider the season. Fresh and light scents feel natural in spring and summer, while warmer, deeper perfumes feel cosy in the British autumn and winter. This is not a rule, but it explains why a perfume that seemed perfect in August can feel thin in December.
Which scent family suits her?
Perfumers group fragrances into families according to their main character. The table below shows the families you will meet most often, the kind of person who tends to enjoy them, and examples from LR’s women’s range. If you want to understand how a perfume develops from its first spray to the last trace on the skin, read our guide to top, heart and base notes.
| Scent family | What it smells like | She might like it if she enjoys | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh and clean | Crisp, light and airy, like clean washing | Simple, understated style and everyday wear | FEEL SHINY, a clean musky floral |
| Soft and powdery | Gentle and comforting, often with iris | Calm, classic elegance and quiet confidence | STAY CALM, a soft powdery iris |
| Light and easy | Pleasant, uncomplicated, close to the skin | A perfume that works from the school run to the office | FEEL COMFY, a light everyday scent |
| Rich floral | Full, heady flowers such as jasmine or tuberose | Dressing up, evenings out, a sense of occasion | GLORIOUS ELIXIR Women, built around jasmine |
| Warm and sweet | Vanilla, tonka, caramel or amber | Cosy winter evenings and comforting scents | Many perfumes add these notes to the base |
A perfume can sit in two families at once. A floral with a warm vanilla base, for example, will appeal both to people who like flowers and to those who like sweet scents.
How do you test a perfume properly?
Testing is where most choices go wrong. The first few minutes of a perfume are dominated by the lightest notes, often citrus or fresh accords, and these fade quickly. What you will actually live with is the heart and base of the perfume, which appear later. Follow these steps for a fair test.
- Spray a paper strip first to rule out anything you clearly dislike.
- Spray the perfume you are seriously considering once on the inside of your wrist or forearm, and do not rub your wrists together, as this warms and changes the first impression.
- Wait at least 20 to 30 minutes before you judge it, and smell it again after two or three hours.
- Test no more than two or three perfumes in one session, because your nose tires quickly and everything starts to smell similar.
- Notice how far the scent carries and how long it lasts on your skin, as both vary from person to person.
If you are choosing a gift, you cannot test it on her skin, so rely on the scent family of her current favourite rather than on how it smells on you.
Eau de parfum or eau de toilette: does it matter?
The difference is mainly the concentration of fragrance oils. An eau de parfum contains more than an eau de toilette, so it tends to last longer and smell richer, and you need fewer sprays. An eau de toilette is lighter and can feel fresher, which some people prefer in hot weather or at work. Neither is better; it depends on how intense she likes her perfume to be.
LR’s women’s perfumes in the Mood Infusion collection are eaux de parfum. According to LR’s announcement in September 2025, the collection includes 11 scents for women and 7 for men, and the company describes each one as refreshing, calming or stimulating in character. The Iconic Elixirs line, launched at the same time, focuses on Egyptian jasmine and Brazilian tonka bean.
Which LR perfumes could suit different women?
For a woman who likes clean, uncomplicated scents, FEEL SHINY is a musky floral that suits everyday wear. If she prefers something soft and calm, STAY CALM is built around powdery iris. For a perfume that is easy to wear from morning to evening, FEEL COMFY is a light, everyday choice. If she loves a sense of occasion, the jasmine-led GLORIOUS ELIXIR Women has a richer, more luxurious character. All of the women’s and men’s scents are in our perfume category.
Here are the four perfumes mentioned in this guide:
How should perfume be applied so that it lasts?
Perfume lasts longer on moisturised skin, so apply it after a shower and body lotion. One or two sprays on pulse points such as the wrists, the inside of the elbows or the base of the neck are usually enough for an eau de parfum. Spraying a little on clothing or a scarf also helps the scent last, although some fabrics can mark, so test on an inconspicuous area first. Keep perfume away from direct sunlight and heat, ideally in its box, rather than on a sunny windowsill or in a steamy bathroom.
According to IQWiG, Germany’s Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care, scents in cosmetics, perfumes and soaps are among the common triggers of allergic contact dermatitis. If you notice redness, itching or a rash where you spray perfume, stop applying it to the skin and spray it onto clothes instead, and see a pharmacist or GP if the rash does not settle.
What if the perfume is a present?
Choosing a perfume as a gift is easier than it seems if you follow the same method: identify the family she likes, match the occasion, and keep the size modest if you are taking a risk. A handwritten note explaining why you chose that scent makes the present more personal. Frequently asked questions
How do I choose a perfume for a woman I do not know well?
Choose a light, versatile scent from the fresh or soft floral family, which most people find pleasant. Avoid very intense or very sweet perfumes when you are unsure.
Why does the same perfume smell different on different people?
Skin type, temperature and even diet can change how a perfume develops. That is why testing on your own skin for a few hours is more reliable than judging from a paper strip.
How many sprays of perfume should I use?
For an eau de parfum, one or two sprays are usually enough. If people around you can smell it from across the room, you have probably used too much.
Can I wear perfume if I have sensitive skin?
Many people with sensitive skin spray perfume onto clothing or hair rather than skin. If you develop redness or itching, stop using it on the skin and speak to a pharmacist.
Should I choose a perfume by the season?
It helps. Fresh and light scents suit warm weather, while richer floral and warm scents feel natural in autumn and winter.
